This was the first club event that I’ve done with the
horse and my first ODE for 8 years. The whole event was awesome
- from the neat people I met at the cross country walk on
Saturday evening, to the awesome people competing in the ODE
and also those running the event. It was great to go out and
enjoy the day and not be made to feel like I should give up
riding and take up knitting ! Everybody I met was really friendly
and positive and the day had a great atmosphere. I loved the
way that jump judges were given a gift at the end of the day
and the bonus of a rosette for me to take home was even better.
Just remember all you competitors - you CAN go from last in
the dressage to first overall (a horse that jumps is useful
- occasionally).

I was
a member of the club in the early ‘90’s and more
recently for the last 5 or so years. The club days are a lot
of fun and everyone is very supportive of each other’s
endeavours, be it in the dressage arena, over a few show hunter
jumps, doing a CTR, whatever. I especially like having the
opportunity to be judged by official judges and yet not feel
the pressure of competition. Not having to plait my horse,
or wear suffocatingly hot riding clobber (ie jackets, ties,
stocks etc) are also big pluses. WRC days are the ideal setting
to lift your game a bit, have a go at a higher level of dressage
test, for example, or have a go at something new for you and
your horse, such as CTR or an ODE. Come on , join our club,
you won’t regret it!!

Having
recently got back into horses after a 15-year break, joining
the WRC was one of the best things I could have done. I’ve
got to know loads of other riders in the area, and the WRC
days are a really good, fun way of getting back into the swing
of competing. It’s also a great way of sharing information
with other riders, and maybe having a go at disciplines (for
me it was show hunter) that you haven’t tried before,
without the stress of a full-on competition.

I joined
the WRC because I thought it would be a great way to meet
like-minded people and get out to a few more events without
too much pressure. And I was right! I have been a member now
for just over four years and on the committee for 3 of those
years. I have met lots of lovely people who enjoy their horses
and who enjoy the social aspect of the club. Many people come
along to “have a go” at something they may not
have tried previously or may not have been confident enough
to try. I really enjoy the encouraging atmosphere of the club
and always try and encourage those people who may be a little
nervous about joining in or competing. It is great to see
people getting out there and having a go and enjoying themselves.
The relaxed atmosphere and no dressing up or plaiting always
makes our lives that much easier. I have found the club activities
a great way to get my young horse out into the competing environment,
and being able to get her out and about without the pressure
of full-on competition has been great for me as well. The
committee members are a great bunch of people who work really
hard to provide a fun and supportive club and lots of activities
to have a go at. I have met many lovely people and made lots
of friends through the club. I highly recommend being a member
of our club and coming to some of our events, and perhaps
in the future joining the fun group of people who run events
on the committee!! Happy riding!!!

WRC has
been a supportive, fun bunch of adults (at least in their
age brackets) who get together to enjoy a common interest
- the care and enjoyment of horses. Not having grown up in
NZ, and not having the family/friends network that being a
"native" usually has, I have found WRC one of the
best ways to meet people and develop networks in a community
that is close to home (Waitemata) and get to know the areas
through the CTRs and local events. The dressage days have
been invaluable for someone who has only had an English saddle
for all of 4 years!! WRC is considered by many "outsiders"
to be a great group of people, with members ranging from the
back yard ponies to the Horse of the Year competitors.

WRC is
a great environment in which to gain experience and have some
fun with your horse without the stress that normal competition
brings. It is an excellent environment for young horses to
socialise, for new combinations to get to know each other
and to have some fun with like minded people.

Over 16
years ago my husband Peter and I tried to join a Pony Club
and trundled off to Dairy Flat. As adults trying to join a
Pony Club were laughed at. This was way before the days of
adult clubs. It was so long ago now we can’t even remember
how we found out about the WRC, but we did and joined up as
quick as we could. Keen and interested we were on the committee
quick as a flash and have been there just about ever since
(apart from a brief break), and Peter has now retired. I have
joined several groups over the years and the WRC is unique.
The committee is made up of a good group of well humoured,
hard working and dedicated woman - where are the men? The
encouragement on the club days is brilliant. I recently entered
a ODE - pre intro. I had never done a dressage test on my
horse, never done a cross-country course. The club members
were so positive, encouraging and really made the event a
memorable one for me - plus the fact I won! So many of us
competing were there because we weren’t afraid to make
mistakes, we know that the support will be there. The club
days are social and if you get near the gazebo and the food
you can chat to your heart’s content. It doesn’t
matter whether you ride a donkey, or if you enjoy interacting
with horses and horsey people this is the place to be. During
the time we have been with the club we have had several new
horses and the club has always been a positive club to bring
new horses to. Jackets are not required, plaiting is a no
no, a brush in the morning might improve your appearance but
don’t worry about the horse! The membership is cheap
and the days that we run are very reasonably priced. The prizes
we supply and input back into the club we are proud of. The
WRC looks forward to meeting and enjoying new members.
